David E. Rook Counsel
David Rook's practice includes patents, trademarks, copyrights, and licensing of intellectual property. Mr. Rook provides counsel in all areas of dispute resolution including litigation, appeals, arbitration and mediation. As an experienced litigator, he represents clients during all phases of a dispute, and is available to provide local assistance to trial counsel with disputes in the Northern District of New York.
Prior to joining Hoffman Warnick in 2008, Mr. Rook served as a trial attorney and appellate attorney, generally focusing on civil matters. He has extensive experience in litigation involving trucking liability, petroleum remediation liability, automobile collision liability, medical malpractice, landowner liability, correctional services, health professional representation, tavern owner liability, and products liability.
Mr. Rook acted as legislative counsel in the New York State Assembly, initially with the Program and Counsel to the Codes Committee and subsequently in the office of Assemblyman Martin A. Luster. He has also maintained positions at the National Marine Fisheries Service, NYS Department of Taxation and Finance, NYS Department of Environmental Conservation and NYS Department of Social Services.
In addition to practicing law, Mr. Rook is a member of New York Task Force 2 (formerly the Capital District Urban/Technical Search and Rescue Team) since 1999, most recently as a rescue specialist. He also served the community as a firefighter and heavy rescue specialist with the Slingerlands Fire Department from 1991 until 2005, as well as commissioner of the Slingerlands Fire District from 1997-2002. His rescue/recovery work includes responding to the World Trade Center collapse in September 2001. Mr. Rook's publications include an account of that work, entitled Devastation's Heart in The Federal Lawyer, No/Dec 2001, Vol. 43, Num. 10, p.44.
Mr. Rook established the Albany Dharma Study Group in 1981, now known as the Shambhala Meditation Center of Albany, where he is a teacher and meditation instructor of the Shambhala Buddhist lineages. Mr. Rook is also a guest lecturer of Buddhism. He created and hosted a public access television show entitled "Discovering Buddhism" and serves as adjunct professor of Buddhism at the College of St. Rose. He is also a member of the Albert Interfaith Council of St. Rose College.
